Baltimore Orthopedic Massage expanding
the county's massage offerings
by Emily Blackner
Baltimore Orthopedic
Massage may be the newest name in the game for Baltimore County, but
owner Alex MacMillan has already found that therapeutic massage is a
valuable and successful service around which to build a business. "I
never bought into the idea that a business will lose money in its first
year," Macmillan said. "So we hit the ground running and immediately
put in the effort to get good clients and repeat clients. So things
are going as well as we expected." Baltimore Orthopedic Massage was
started in May of this year by MacMillan, a business and government
major who saw a need in the community that he could fill. "There's been
a deficiency in the massage scene. You see it mostly in spas and salons
but there wasn't a lot of people doing therapeutic and corrective work
with doctors," he explained. That's just what Baltimore Orthopedic Massage
specializes in, although they also offer relaxation massage as well.
The seven massage therapists employed by the company work closely with
doctors and osteopaths to help people who have suffered an injury or
illness to regain or improve their range of motion as they recover.
Macmillan noted that recently his therapists have had success working
with hip replacement patients and those with movement disorders. In
fact, some local doctors have contracted Baltimore Orthopedic Massage
specifically to do work on their patients. "Our patients are able to
regain function and usually can regain most range of motion," he shared.
MacMillan explained that Baltimore Orthopedic Massage is also available
for private parties and events as well. "How a party goes will depend
on who's putting it together," he elaborated. "We recently did one for
a group of lawyers, where we had two chairs and a foot massage station
and people just came up and got a massage. But the party could also
be a lot smaller; you could add our services on to practically any party
you're planning." The therapists are also available for house calls
and private sessions as well, and they serve the entirety of Baltimore
County. In addition to their therapeutic work, Baltimore Orthopedic
Massage also offers great relaxation massages. "It's amazing what general
relaxation can do," MacMillan declared, adding that some doctors prescribe
that as well. Currently, the company is operating as part of Maryland
Colabs, a shared space for small, independent business owners and entrepreneurs
to collaborate, share resources and advice and cooperate in a professional
setting. The office is located at 505 Eastern Blvd. in Essex, and Baltimore
Orthopedic Massage is there from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. Monday - Wednesday
and 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. Thursday and Saturday. Friday hours are by advance
appointment only, and therapists can also conduct appointments outside
of the posted hours at the Colabs building. MacMillan is in the process
of getting his massage license to enable Baltimore Orthopedic Massage
to do even more important work for community members who need it. "People
come to us looking for some way to get function back and improve their
quality of life, and we are able to help them," he said. "It's very
rewarding, a lot more so than anything I've done in the past." Baltimore
Orthopedic Massage is a member of Maryland Colabs, 505 Eastern Blvd.
in Essex. They are open Monday - Wednesday, 6 - 8 p.m.; Thursday and
Saturday 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. and Friday by appointment, and closed on Sundays.
